Bearing the Dresden label Marie Robel, the dress likely belonged to a German emigrant to America, where it survived the upheavals of two world wars. It was formerly housed in the Museum of the City of New York, adding further provenance to its remarkable journey. Crafted from celadon (sea green) silk,
